"Mobile phones are no longer safe and the military will switch back to traditional walkie-talkies to avoid any spying by Singapore, Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin said yesterday. . .
Sonthi, on Wed-nesday dropped a bombshell by saying that mobile-phone conversations were being picked up and relayed to Singapore. He suggested the city-state could be spying on Thailand."

Have you noticed that Thaksin's sale of Shin Satellite to Singapore, which was the center piece of the antagonism against Thaksin, appears to have dropped into some black hole since the cabinet made a U-turn two weeks ago and startled everyone by saying that the telecom industry was not within the new "nominee" corporate rules. No one wants to talk about that anymore.
Now, General Sonthi, the leader of the coup, says the Thai army can't use mobile phones because Singapore ( thru Shin) may be listening in. It would be harder to imagine a more serious potential threat to national security than the one suggested by the general' s comments: that a foreign government has easy access to monitoring the Thai army's mobile calls.
This suggests that the there may be sharp differences of opinion in the ruling junta and its appointed government on how to deal with the matter of the Shin sale to Singapore, which may be far from a "done deal" yet.

Paranoia or stupidity or both.
Presuming it is actually true, it was truly stupid to assert it publicly. I hope Sonthi knows how to run an army because he sure as hell can't run anything else with intelligence.
