You may have perhaps seens some of the recent ads in the newspapers here in Bangkok, touting the use of stem cells to treat things like heart disease, diabetes and retina repairs at various Thai hospitals.
According to the article linked below, these medical procedures are highly experimental and available in hospitals or clinids in Thailand "because there is no regulation that allows the FDA to test stem-cell material before it is used on a patient. "
The Thai authorities are in the process forming committees to consider if and what kind of controls should be imposed on the use of such experimental research techniques. Right now, it's up to your doctor to determince what new procedures to recommend for treatment.

I remember reading in the Bangkok post this past December, 2006 that Hawaiian entertainer Don Ho was in Bangkok getting stem cell injections into his heart to treat his advanced heart disease. they said it was an experimental procedure that was not approved in the USA.
I also remember reading that Don Ho died in April, 2007.

It's true that the costs of hospital procedures here in Thailand are much lower than Europe or the USA. I am not sure, howwever, that the quality of the medical care that is received is as competent or safe. The fact that some of Bangkok's most prestigious hospitals would routinely allow stem cell surgery that's "experimental" at best raises serious questions in my mind about the competence or medical ethics of these institutions.
