"It could very well benefit the community as a whole, with the passing of Ian and various other woes, including myself, with a new fresh approach, re-vamp and bringing in and up to 2007 standards. All ideas grown stale and become dated and it has had a very good run under its present format for many years."

That's the way Splash Kevin of the big-fish-bowl fame characterized the state of things at Cafe Royale these days. The comments were made on Sawatdee Forum in response to rumors that the Boystown Hotel is in the process of being sold. We hope for the sake of the current owners that the buyers, if there are any, don't read the comments if they're still negotiating the price.

I can't see how Kevin can justify such comment. The room en-suites were completely refurbished and modernised about three of four years ago and as a result they have the best and most efficient power showers of anywhere I have stayed in Thailand. The rooms themselves were re-decorated and updated within the last year or eigtheen months with new aircon units and entertainment systems installed. The bedding changed from sheets to duvet type covers at the same time. The only thing the rooms need are some new mattresses and more comfortable casual seating. I do know that some customers do not like the tiled floors and would much prefer carpeting in the rooms.

The restaurant is perfect for what it is used as although the menus could do with renewing and updating. The public facilities are modern and are always spotlessly clean.

The piano bar concept is liked by many but, personally, I do find that the idea is stale and could do with a rethink.

If the place is up for sale - and I understand that it is not formally advertised as such but the owners would be open to a realistic and reasonable offer - I hope that it continues to be the pleasant, comfortable and welcoming establishment it has always been.

Kevin was the previous owner of the Splash/Throb showbar/gogo bars. He also had a financial interest in Le Cafe Royale. He sold up his interests in both concerns about a year or so ago following drastic surgery for throat cancer and retired to Kalasin in Issan with his long-time boyfriend.

The Café Royale continues to enjoy a loyal following. Perhaps a fresh image would attract additional customers. I don't see Kevin's comments as harmful. He is simply telling it as he sees it.
