"An 80-year-old resident of polluted Map Ta Phut has never heard from Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla since they promised to arrange an operation for him two months ago.

Sawas Phan-ngarm, who has a tumour the size of a table-tennis ball in his neck, attracted the attention of Surayud and Mongkol when they visited people living near Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in Rayong on May 23. "They promised to arrange for someone to pick me up for an operation. I dressed up waiting for that someone for the next two days, but nobody came," Sawas said...

Another resident, Laksana Promjan, said doctors visited her community only once after the government vowed to take care of the health of people living near the industrial estate. "My daughter has moved away because she is now pregnant and we are worried that the pollution will harm her baby," Laksana said...

Noi Jaitang, 67 ...said he was now worried about orange-coloured water in local ponds. "The water also smells of rusting. It can't be used any more," he said. According to him, Map Ta Phut Municipality cleaned and drained the ponds twice. Yet, when the water was in there, it turned orange and smelled strange.

"Many authorities have come in to collect water samples. So far, they have never told us what their tests have found," Noi said. "
