After reading about this fire truck scandal since Day 1 of the coup, and reading about the claims that millions of baht were wasted in kick-backs, it looks like the whole thing is about to get written off as much ado about nothing. I can't say I am surprised. The more things change, the more they appear to stay the same. If you read the paper quickly this morning, you would have missed this gem:

"The Interior Ministry's report following its probe into the Bt6.68-billion fire-truck procurement scandal does not clearly implicate anyone in particular, permanent secretary Phongphayome Wasaphooti said yesterday.

The report "recommends neutral results along with certain advice", he said.

The ministry will rely mainly on the conclusions of its own panel, while also considering the results of a parallel investigation soon to be completed by the Assets Examination Committee (AEC). The report will then be forwarded to Interior Minister Aree Wongsearaya for a final decision on the case, Phongphayome said."

It comes as no great surprise that the folks populating the Interior Ministry, most of whom were probably there when this fire truck deal occurred, are not about to start pointing fingers about who may have done what to whom and how much they got for it. It will be interesting to see if the AEC goes along with the report.

I may have missed it, but has anyone of any significance gone to jail for alleged corruption since the coup occurred ?

How about for the past 20 years ? The one famous big wig they did convict of corruption - and murder - the Godfather of Chonburi, was set free on bail and vanished before he served one day in jail. TIT.
