The Assets Scrutiny Committee (ASC) will appoint a new sub-panel to handle City Hall's fire trucks and boats procurement deal, replacing the old team who resigned en masse on Wednesday.

ASC chairman Nam Yimyaem said yesterday it was likely the committee would appoint one of its 11 members to head the new sub-panel. Having someone familiar with the case would mean the new team would not have to start at square one.

Prasert Boonsri, the sub-panel's chairman and his six investigators, cited disagreement as a reason for their resignation, Mr Nam said. The sub-panel's letter said its job was complete and reinvestigating the case ''would lead to non-compliance and affect the case's direction''.

Mr Prasert said his team decided not to follow the ASC's instruction to reopen the case because the investigation had gone too far and was too complicated. The resignation resulted from the committee's Sept 3 decision to give the team two more weeks to reinvestigate the 6.7-billion-baht deal, gather more evidence and find out who else could be held responsible."
