"The crackdown on the insurgency in the South has been successful, with the number of insurgents shrinking to only 20,000, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday. . .

Insurgents now made up less than 1% of the 2.4 million population in the three southernmost provinces, or no more than 20,000. This was a sharp drop from the previous estimate, he said, but did not give the previous estimate. . .

Sunai Phasuk, the Human Rights Watch representative in Thailand, confirmed Gen Surayud's belief. He said since security authorities launched sweeping crackdowns in red zones in June, the incidence of violence had dropped by 50-60%. With large numbers of suspected insurgents taken into custody and caches of weapons confiscated, attacks were now limited. . .

The Advisory Council for Peace yesterday disclosed its road map for next year, which draws on His Majesty the King's sufficiency economy philosophy and advises a strategy to ''understand, access and develop''. The council represents local people in helping the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre restore peace in the South. . .

In Pattani, a temporary office of the Graso tambon administration organisation in Mayo district was torched yesterday, the second time the TAO had been targeted. It moved to the community learning centre in June after its previous office was burnt down."
