There's an interesting piece in today's Nation which says that Finance Ministry, which has been rushing to propose all sorts of new legislation before the next elected Parliament hits town, has decided to leave for the next government the question of what kind of inheritance tax on the rich, if any, should be adopted in Thailand.
According to the article, the income distribution between rich and poor in Thailand is getting worse, not better, with the highest income group making 13.2 time more income than the poorest group during the 1990s. That compares to Indonesia, where the richest have only 5.6 times more than the poorest.

You may recall that the junta's hand-picked National Assembly, which reputedly has some very rich and influential sponsors and members in its ranks, decided that taxing the estates of rich Thais was too radical a concept for Thailand's conservative society. This was a coup d'etat, after all, not a revolution.
It will be interesting to see how far this idea gets in the next parliament.
