"The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a warning to all countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Thailand, about the threat of malaria. . .An expert on malaria from the University of Hawaii warned that malaria was spreading in Asia and Southeast Asia at an increased rate this year.

He stated that Cambodia had the highest number of patients, followed by Burma and then Thailand. Last year, Indonesia had the highest number of malaria sufferers, with numbers ranging between 150,000-160,000.

He attributed the fast spread of malaria to random decentralization which creates a larger number of breeding grounds for mosquitoes, the main carrier of malaria. He warned that up to 1.8 billion people in the Asia-Pacific region risk contracting the disease."
