Thailand's king taken to hospital

Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej is in hospital after feeling weak in his right side, the royal palace has said. The 79-year-old king was taken to Bangkok's Siriraj hospital on Saturday morning, where scans revealed an inadequate blood supply to his brain.

The condition improved after treatment but requires further observation.

A statement from the Bureau of the Royal Household said scans had revealed "a minimal cerebral ischemia" on the left side of the king's brain, meaning that part of his brain was not receiving enough blood to function normally.

"Hospitalised Saturday for treatment of cerebral ischemia, His Majesty the King underwent about eight hours of surgery and related treatment for a blood clot which obstructed the flow of blood to his brain, official Thai News Agency reported.

His Majesty was admitted to Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital Saturday for threatment after showing symptoms of loss of strength in the right side of his body, the Royal Household announced.

Doctors diagnosed the king, 79, as suffering from lack an inadequate blood supply to the outer part of the left-side of his brain, said the Royal Household in an announcement broadcast on Thai TV.

According to the Stanford University medical school website, "Cerebral ischemia occurs when the brain does not receive enough blood flow to maintain normal neurologic function."

Following eight hours of drug administration by doctors, the king regained strength over his right leg and other parts of his body, the bureau said."

It's very similar to a stroke. Doesn't look good.

As far as I can tell, there hasn't been any medical bulletin or other update issued about the King's condition since Saturday night here. Thai TV seems to be on its regular soap opera and talk show schedule with no special coverage of the hospitalization or medical bulletins that I have been able to see. Let's hope that means that the King is recovering nicely from his surgery.

As far as I can tell, the BKk Post bulletin below is the latest that's been published in Bangkok and it doesn't say much more than they said yesterday night.

"Her Majesty the Queen this morning visited her ailing husband at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital where His Majesty remained under observation after treatment of a cerebral ischemia.

The King, the world's longest reigning king, was taken to Siriraj Hospital at about 9am Saturday, according to a statement from the Royal Household Bureau.

"Some eight hours of treatment alleviated the weakness in the right leg. The team of physicians then recommended hospitalisation for treatment and observation," the statement said.

Cerebral ischemia means that the brain or parts of the brain are not receiving sufficient blood to maintain normal thinking and bodily functions. It can result from various diseases and obstruction of arteries such as by the blood clot removed from the monarch's leg."
