"There is no need to form a special committee to probe into the huge stash of cash seized in a house raid in Narathiwat last week that reportedly went missing, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said Thursday.
Gen Surayud said he received an initial report that the person who tipped off authorities in the case, which led to the finding of more than 30 million baht, told officials there was actually much more money than reported. The prime minister, however said he does not know the exact amount of money unearthed from the house.
According to news reports, there was a much as 70 million baht stuffed inside lengths of PVC pipes buried in the kitchen of a house. Authorities have linked the cash to a drug trafficking ring in the North and insurgent operations in the deep South."

Reminiscent of the case about a year or two ago when a Farang couple were burgled in their Pattaya hotel room and foreign currency in the region of 4,000 US dollars and about 45,000 in Thai baht was stolen from their in-room safe.
The BIB caught the culprit (the night receptionist) within a few hours of the theft being discovered. When they counted up the items recovered after a search of the perp's house the BIB claimed that 2,500 US dollars and 20,000 Baht was still missing and unaccounted for!! The perp insisted that he had only spent about 2,000 baht and the rest was still at his house when the BIB arrested him.
Go figure !!

"Col Manas Kongpan, who lead authorities to seize 30 million baht from a suspected drug dealer's house in Narathiwat last week admitted Friday that two PVC pipes where cash was hidden have gone missing.
Authorities have reported that 30.4 million baht was found stuffed inside lengths of seven PVC pipes buried in the kitchen floor of the house in Sungai Kolok district.
However, a man who claimed to have led security forces to the house claimed that the amount uncovered was more than 70 million baht. Col Manas confirmed during a radio interview that authorities did not pocket the money.
He suspected that this could be a plan of the insurgents. "Insurgents may ask the man to discredit authorities," he said. "
