It's official: Like General Sherman, General Sonthi chooses not to run as a candidate in the upcoming elections. Unlike Sherman, however, Sonthi says he might be available to serve in the new government, assuming some of the old roosters running for office would welcome a fox to help guard the coop.
"General Sonthi Boonyaratkalin has finally clarified his political intentions, affirming that he will not be entering the political scene for now – at least not in the December election. For many months, there has been widespread speculation that the coup mastermind, former chief of the Council for National Security and former army chief was planning to contest the general election.
Now deputy prime minister in charge of security, General Sonthi brushed aside claims he will run in the election. "I will no longer enter politics. But if the new government invites me to join as a minister, I may think about it,” he said.
Mr Sonthi admitted that his insistence on remaining tight-lipped about his political future all this time was a hoax. Reacting to reports that the People Power party is currently in the lead, Gen Sonthi reiterated that it was "up to the people to decide who wins”."
