Regardless of what the military authorities say about their strategy to win the political war against the southern insurgency with the force of arms, I can't help but get an ominous feeling when I read stories every week about yet another knock on the door in a pre-dawn raid on an entire southern villages, to wit:

"A combined force of 300 security officials detained five suspected insurgents in a pre-dawn raid on a village on an island just outside Narathiwat's Tak Bai district yesterday.Authorities said the five men held after a search of 70 homes had been involved in a wave of bombings and shootings in the three southernmost provinces.

One of the men detained is a Cambodian national who did not have proper travel documents, police said.

It was not clear if any of the five had warrants out for their arrest or whether they had been detained under martial law."
