Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday that Thaksin Shinwatra, who was ousted in the September 19 coup, had telephoned him to ask about a return to Thailand.

Speaking to reporters after returning from his first official visit to Laos, Surayud said the former premier can come back because he is a Thai citizen, but there must be prior consultation about the appropriate timing.....

Meanwhile, a source at Thai Rak Thai party said that Thaksin, who is living in London, had been monitoring the political situation in Thailand very closely via Sudarat Keyuraphan, a deputy TRT leader, and other senior party members....

The source claimed Thaksin remained confident of a comeback because he anticipated the sympathy of his constituents."

I wonder what they would do if he and the family just landed at the new airport unannounced.

The landing of a former Thai dictator at Bangkok Airport in 1976 was the event that eventually triggered the October massacre of students and ensuing coup d'etat.

Benigno Aquino tried that in 1983 in the Philippines, when Marcos was still running that country under martial law, and he never left Manila airport alive, being shot in the head by an assassin, who was then shot in the head by police. They blamed it on the dead communist.

I doubt very much that Khun Thaksin will arrive at the airport unless and until he has assurances from the highest authorities that he is welcome and safe to return.

Greet him with open arms, I should imagine. Of course, the arms would be joined together in handcuffs. They may even put him and some of his family up in the "Bangkok Hilton" ! laugh.gif

Read your Thai history and you will conclude that the last thing that the coup leaders want is for Thaksin to return to Thailand, if they are honestly interested in reforming Thai politics. He would be the monkey wrench thrown right into the middle of the gears.

If he remained free, the PAD people could be in the streets calling for his arrest. If he were arrested, the Caravan of the Poor might descend on Bangkok like a plague of locusts.

On the other hand, if some folks with other ambitions, want to provoke a crisis with a real potential for violence, there's probably no better way to do that than to drop the deposed leader back into the soup here at home. It would serve as a dandy pretext for all sorts of actions, if one were so inclined.
