Anyone noticed? We have 270 registered members.
Just recently newbies were joining with membership numbers in the 2000s and 3000s as opposed to in the mid-100s a couple of days before. The membership numbers have suddenly shot up again and the latest addition 'Harold' has membership number 11016.
Something strange happening? (Reminiscent of how a Bangkok taxi-meter runs out of control when left switched on!!).
Would the Mods like to investigate and comment?

The reasons for the difference in numbers is that every application for membership is consecutively numbered when made, but members are not admitted or allowed to post until Bahtstop approves the application. According to Bahtstop, who does all the member approvals, he gets dozens of member applications daily, 99% of which are bots or other commerical spammers who just want to join to post their commercials. These member applications are not approved for posting and deleted once a week or so. They can generally be identified as spammers by their name or email address.
The current total of 270 is the number of members who have registered and been approved for posting.

Thank you kind Sir for the explanation
I know that spammers and bots are increasingly active but to get what appears to be about 8000 applications to join in the space of a few weeks is truly amazing !
Congratulations and thanks to Bahtstop himself for keeping us relatively safe by excluding these these morons and nuisances !!

I am curious: How can you tell a spammer name from a legitimate member using a hotmail, AOL, yahoo or other recognizable address ?

According to the Administrator, virtually none of the spam originates from email address you would recognize, such as yahoo, hotmail, AOL, etc. Much of the junk comes from email addresses ending in an "ru" suffix. It's quite easy to separate out the genuine member applications from the spammers on most items, although they can get lost in the crowd of spammers sometimes.
