"The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) that has served as the national legislature for the past one and a half years and passed over 200 bills into law convened for its last meeting yesterday. The 250-member legislative body, after being installed by the Council for National Security which staged the Sept 19, 2006 coup, served as both the lower and upper house under the 2006 interim charter.

Following the Dec 23 general election and the formation of an elected House of Representatives, the NLA abridged its role to serve as the interim Senate in parliament only. But its senate role, too, will end on Monday after the senate election in 76 provinces tomorrow.

Outgoing NLA Speaker Meechai Ruchupan chaired the assembly's last convention yesterday. He told fellow members that since the NLA's inception in late-2006, it had had 95 meetings, passed 218 acts and one royal enactment."
