"Japanese importers have reversed their decision to buy 60,000 tonnes of Thai rice, because the price has nearly doubled in a month, the Thai Rice Exporters Association said on Wednesday.
Japan only began buying Thai rice a few years ago, after centuries of total protectionism for its own rice farmers. The excuse given on Wednesday was that Tokyo did not want to be seen as pushing up global rice prices.
Chookiat Ophaswongse, president of the association, said Thailand on Tuesday offered the Japanese government 100 per cent white rice at $1,300 per tonne, nearly 41,000 baht - up from the $720, or 22,700 baht it paid in March. "Japan turned down this offer, saying that the price was too high for their budget," Mr Chookiat said."
