'Swirl face' gets jail

Canadian teacher Christopher Paul Neil on Friday was sentenced to three years and three months in jail for kidnapping and sexually abusing an underage boy in Thailand.

The court also imposed a 60,000 baht fine on the 32-year-old man who had pleaded guilty on the charge on May 12.

His initial sentence was six years and six months, but it was reduced by the court because he had pleaded guilty.

Neil was seized in the Northeast in October following a campaign by the international police agency Interpol, which had reconstructed a series of digitally obscured internet images of a man abusing Asian boys.

The man in the pictures had created a swirl to hide his face, but German computer experts were able to reconstruct the images.

By the standard of justice meted out to farangs in similar cases in the past he got off extremely lightly!

BBC News is reporting that he still faces similar charges relating to the 13 yr old's boy's younger brother
- charges which he denies.

Perhaps some enlightenment has begun to creep into the judicial process. You know, in a lot of American jurisdictions these days, you can get a more severe sentence for touching a young man's private parts than for killing him while driving your car drunk. Does that make any sense ?
