"The Department of Corrections plans to house male and female prisoners together, starting with the Chaibadan jail in Lop Buri. The measure is being taken to ease crowded conditions for female inmates.
The pilot programme, set to start early this year, will have the same number of male and female inmates in the same jail, the department's director-general Nathee Chitsawang said.
"Female prisoners will be given the same training as male prisoners. They will no longer be confined in a small corner of the jail, but will instead be given the same access to buildings and areas as male inmates," he said.
"We are doing this to ease overcrowding. In addition, female officials will be given the same duties and will work side by side with male officials in order to solve the shortage of staff."
He said the department aimed to promote gender equality in prisons."

That has got to be the quote of the year and the year has just begun!

Don't be surprised if they start opening "massage" parlours in the co-ed jails for vocational training.

Actually, some of the women's prisons like the one in the old city in Chiang Mai do offer Thai massage and nail-grooming services to female civilians at minimal rates. Ostensibly it is to allow the inmates the opportunity to practise the skills they've learned in their so-called rehab programme and to earn some pocket money (possibly bribe money for the prison guards). An inexpensive way for Chiang Mai ladies on a budget to spend their Sunday afternoon provided they are not perturbed by the prospect of a neck grip from a masseuse who looks like Charles Bronson and a bunch of Ma Barker puying Thai handling sharp instruments.
