Democrat Sukhumbhand wins Bangkok Governor election

"Democrat Party's candidate Sukhumbhand Baribatra won a landslide victory in the Bangkok governor election Sunday, sweeping 934,602 votes or 45.41 per cent of all votes cast, the Election Commission announced.

The EC announced the unofficial result at 2:32 am Monday.It said 2,120,721 or 51.10 per cent of 4,150,103 eligible voters exercised their right. A total of 16,107 ballots or 0.76 per cent became invalid. A total of 46,395 voters or 2.19 per cent cast a no-vote.

Pheu Thai Party's candidate Yuranan Phamornmontri got 611,669 votes or 29.72 per cent, followed by independent candidate ML Nattakorn Devaula, who got 334,846 votes or 16.27 per cent. Another independent candidate, Kaewsan Atibodhi received 144,779 votes or 7.03 per cent."

I would hardly call it a landslide when the winning candidate gets 45 % of the vote, with a turnout of 51% of registered voters. Then again, it is The Nation doing the reporting ! I wonder if the whole thing of having Governor Apirak run for re-election and win just last December - and then getting him to resign because the anti-corruption commission implicated him in the fire truck scandal - was all staged to put one of the Bangkok's elite's favorite sons into the governor's position in a special election they figured it would be easy to win with a predictably very low turnout.
