In case you prefer it, the BKK Post had an article yesterday which noted that an increasing number of restaurants and sidewalk stalls in Chiang Mai are serving dog food, although it doesn't appear on the menu.

The way that you can tell if a place has dog food is the presence of a large black covered crock pot at the entrance or in front of the food stand. That's the signal to canine gourmets that dog meat is available for the asking.

According to the article, black dogs are prized as the tastiest and most nutritious meat. How one can tell what color hair the dog had after grilling is unclear.

As far as I can tell, Pattaya has never had any agency to deal with the problem of street dogs, with no birth control or animal refuge program of any kind to deal with all the strays that roam the streets.

There was an article in Pattaya Mail a couple of weeks ago about animal welfare volunteers vaccinating stray dogs against rabies.
All well and good - but why oh why did they not neuter them at the same time? That would have a small, but in the end, significant effect on the number of strays on the streets which seem to have increased considerably each time I visit.

As for dog stew, it is not a surprise that this is happening in Chiang Mai with its large population of Chinese descent. It will only be a matter of time before it will be common-place in Pattaya given the ever increasing number of Chinese and Korean tourists who are visiting on package tours. (Maybe they will end up with dog pounds attached to restaurants where the diner can select "on the paw" which dog is for the chop and the cook pot laugh.gif They would then at least know what colour the fur was!! )

Does it really matter ?. I mean if you are going to eat a cow or a chicken does eating a dog make much difference ?

Mind you I don't see many black dogs anymore. Would they taste better than a poodle ? I think I'll remain a vegan.

Funny place though. All this talk of Karma and such in Thailand and they still do strange things.
