Lifting of martial law not related to Thaksin

"Air Force Commande-in-Chief Chalit Phukbhasuk said Saturday that the Council for National Security decision to revoke martial law has nothing to do with the movements of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Air Cheif Marshal Chalit, who also serves as vice-chairman of the CNS, said intelligence units report that there is "nothing unusual" regarding reported activities by supporters of Mr Thaksin.

Marshal Chalit said media attention surrounding Mr. Thaksin's globe-trotting activities had no impact whatsoever on the CNS decision to lift martial law."

Martial law to be kept in 7 provinces

The day after the Air Force general made the statement above about Thaksin, this appeared today:

Defence Minister General Boonrawd Somtas has confirmed that martial law will be lifted in December except in seven provinces, four of which contain active elements of the Thai Rak Thai Party.

The other three other provinces where martial law will be retained are the three southernmost areas of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, which are still suffering daily violence from a separatist insurgency.

Boonrawd said that certain groups of people in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Buri Ram and Surin were still active in politics and had maintained close connections with ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is presently in Hong Kong.

"We have to maintain martial law in those four provinces in order to prevent those groups of people from trying to make political moves," Boonrawd said.
