UPDATE: Martial law lifted - partly

"The cabinet voted today to lift martial law in 41 of the 76 provinces, including Bangkok. . .

"The cabinet has approved the lifting of martial law in accordance with a request by the Council of National Security," Surayud told reporters after a cabinet meeting, referring to the military junta that led the coup.

Bangkok, the capital, was among the provinces where martial law was lifted to bolster international confidence in the country, Defence Minister General Boonrawd Somtat added.

The coup council chairman, army commander Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, said on Monday martial law should be maintained in the capital. He said the government would be held responsible for any problems that occurred if it lifted martial law."
