"A 65-year-old German tourist who died of flu-like symptoms on Monday was initially tested positive for H1N1 at a lab in Bangkok, but authorities are awaiting further tests before confirming whether she had Influenza A(H1N1). Pol Lt Somyot Deemak, head of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, said his laboratory had detected H1N1 in the woman's sample. Public Health Ministry will conduct further test, he said, the ministry will announce the result soon.

Earlier Deputy Permanent Secretary for Health Paijit Warajit said the German woman, identified as Mrs Barbel Wilhelmine, arrived in Thailand on May 12 with her husband, and their child. She showed no flu symptoms. They then drove to a Hua Hin resort, Prachuab Khiri Khan. They stayed in a hotel for about a week before having chest pains and breathing difficulties on May 18.

Her husband alerted hotel staff who sent her to San Paolo Hua Hin Hospital. The German stopped breathing on her way to the hospital, but the paramedics used CPR to revive her. The hospital then referred her case to Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok, but she died on the way, in Samut Sakhon province, on May 18. . .

Thailand has reported two confirmed cases of the influenza 2009. Both Thai nationals who had recently visited Mexico. Both fully recovered after receiving anti-influenza drugs."

No doubt, the final diagnosis will be made by the doctors at the Tourist Authority.

"The government yesterday concluded a German tourist who visited Thailand earlier this month died of pneumonia after she did not test positive for the deadly type-A (H1N1) influenza virus.Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nop-amornbodi said rumours that 65-year-old Barbel Wilhelmine was infected with the virus and became the first victim to die from it here were false."

Last week they had to send samples to Washington to confirm H1N1. Now, they can say rule it out right here. Hmmmmm........

I'm with you. This is what the Thai medical authorities said on May 10:

"The ministry has already submitted this person's sample to the U.S. CDC lab because Thailand has no sample of A (H1N1) to compare for confirmation, he said, the result should be out within seven days. . ."

Now, they say they can tell that this German didn't die of Swine flu within hours of death, after their own forensics said she had the virus. It all sounds terribly too much like the Bird Flu fiasco.
