Get ready for more potholes and accidents on Thailand highways and streets :

"The Transport Ministry plans to relax truck weight limits for another three and a half years from this month to help operators cope with the economic downturn. The decision came after Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum met with trucking representatives and highway authorities at the ministry yesterday.

Mr Sohpon said transport officials would not enforce the weight limit of 21 tonnes for 10-wheel trucks and 50.5 tonnes for 22-wheel trucks. The limit for the 10-wheel trucks would be extended to 25 tonnes and 53 tonnes for 22-wheel vehicles until Dec 31, 2012.
"This will be the last round of leniency. It must be extended to help relieve the hardship of the operators who have invested in their trucks," he said.

Yesterday, a representative of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) sought the minister's support to increase the height of lorries which transport vehicles from 4.2 metres to 4.6 metres, putting them on a par with the height of trucks that carry containers.Mr Sohpon said he would discuss the request with other economic ministers.

Yoo Jianyuenyong, chairman of the Land Transportation Association of Thailand, said extending the weight limit would increase the income of trucking operators by about 1,500 baht a trip. Chote Jongpeepian, deputy director-general for highways, said the increased weight would shorten the life span of bridges."
