"The government would declare a state of emergency if the anti-government demonstration led by the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship on Saturday turned violent, Deputy Prime Minister for security affairs Suthep Thaugsuban said on Friday afternoon.“I have already drafted the declaration,'' Mr Sutrhep said.''It can be immediately announced if the red-shirts rally gets out of contro.''

The deputy premier said he had authorised police chief Pol Gen Phatcharawat Wongsuwan to oversee the situation as he and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva have overseas appointments.

He had directed police to deal with the protesters in line with international standards, but the law must be strictly enforced. The military forces would assist in maintaining peace and order if requested by police."

______________

Could this scenario, with the red shirts rally having been scheduled for tomorrow for weeks, and with both PM Opposite and Deputy PM Suthep out of the country, be the set-up for a bloody military crackdown on red shirts ?

lets see how many the nation/post say attended later.

They are reporting as if from two different planets:
NATION headline: Heavy rains disperse red-shirt protesters

The political situation here in Thailand reminds me of the board games such as Monopoly and Chess which we played as children, except that the power players use the streets of Bangkok, Pattaya, and Southern Thailand as their gaming board, and (unfortunately) the weapons, violence, real estate, corruption, and money are genuine.
