I thought that the Prime Minister siad last week that the police chief was going to take a month leave of absence so that the Sonshi investigation could proceed "without interference."
This bulletin just in:
"Pol Gen Patcharawat Wongsuwan Monday officially informed the prime minister and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban and his subordinates that he has already returned to his office as the national police chief. Patcharawat sent a memo dated August 9 to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Suthep, informing them that he had returned to work.
He noted in the memo that he had also informed his subordinates on Sunday that he had returned to work. With Patcharawat already returning to work, Pol Gen Wichien Pojphosri has to stop acting as the acting police commissioner-general."

This should make it as clear as ....mud.
"Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday declined to clarify who is really in charge at the Royal Thai Police Office following the early return from leave of police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwon. Mr Abhisit earlier approved Pol Gen Patcharawat's request for leave to visit China from Aug 5 to 14. He said the police chief would return briefly on Aug 11-12 for the celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen's birthday.
But Pol Gen Patcharawat returned earlier than expected on Saturday. On Monday morning, he went to his office at police headquarters and sent a circular, dated Aug 9, to all deputy and assistant police chiefs and police commissioners advising that he had returned to work.
Pol Gen Wichien Pojphosri, who was appointed acting police chief while Pol Gen Patcharawat was away, said he would return to normal duties as an adviser to the national police office.
However, he did not say clearly when his time as acting police chief would officially end."

Only in Thailand does that make perfect sense.
Hehehe....

This is getting absurd. Two sergeants and one corporal, none of whom are in custody. And they claim they're going to find "Mr. Big."
"The Criminal Court on Monday approved a warrant for the arrest of another suspect in the attempted murder of People's Alliance for Democracy Sondhi Limthongkul, said a police source. The additional suspect is identified as Sgt Somchai Bunnag, attached to the 3rd Special Warfare Regiment at Erawan Camp in Lop Buri.
Warrants were earlier approved for the arrest of two suspects - Sgt Major Panya Mungsanti of the Special Warfare Centre in Lop Buri and Pol Cpl Worawut Srihera of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau. All three suspects remain at large."

This is the Thai version of the Keystone Cops. No one trusts the guy to investigate the Sindhi assassination attempt, but no one has the balls to fire him either.
"Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban on Tuesday confirmed his instruction to dispatch national police chief General Patcharawat Wongsuwan on an inspection trip to the Deep South. "Patcharawat will go to the South after the expiry of his leave on August 14," he said.
Suthep said Patcharawat, who cut short his visit to China, will not be involved in the running of the Royal Thai Police because he would be focusing on solving the backlog of cases in the strife-torn region.Following his assignment in the three southern provinces, Patcharawat has been assigned to supervise the preparations for the Asean Summit, scheduled for October, he said."

"Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon will not resign his portfolio because he understands that the prime minister has the authority to assign police chief Pol Gen Phatcharawat Wongsuwon, his brother, to duties in the far South, Gen Noppadon Inthapanya, secretary-general of the defence minister, said on Wednesday.
Gen Noppadon said Gen Prawit was satisfied with the premier’s solution to the current problem in the national police force will continue working as the minister of defence. He had no ideas about the meeting of the Police Commission called by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban this Thursday, the same day Pol Gen Phatcharawat is scheduled to visit the far South.
It is speculated that Pol Gen Phatcharawat was sent to the deep South to allowr Pol Gen Wichien Pojphosri to handle the reshuffle list of high ranking police officers, as demanded by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva."

It looks like the police chief has received the German WW II equivalent of being transferred to the Eastern front. What's not clear is whether this face-saving device to transfer him into a southern exile, away from the Sondhi investigation and the re-shuffling of police generals, will end the obvious struggle for power that's going on in this Administration. One thing seems clear: Junior is trying mightily to reverse the emerging consensus that he is not in control of his own government.

"Big changes are expected when the Police Commission meets today to vet a proposed reshuffle list involving officers from the level of deputy superintendent on down, a police source said. The revision is widely speculated because national police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwon, who prepared the list, will not be there to defend it.
Pol Gen Patcharawat was assigned to the deep South to inspect anti-insurgency operations until Aug 18 after he cut short a 10-day visit to China by six days and returned home on Saturday. Wichien Pojphosri has been appointed caretaker police chief while Pol Gen Patcharawat is away and will attend today's meeting of the Police Commission on his behalf.
The appointment order signed by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has been received by Pol Gen Wichien. In his order dated Aug 11, Mr Abhisit invoked the Royal Thai Police Act to appoint Pol Gen Wichien as acting police chief. However, according to the order, it was Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban who sent Pol Gen Patcharawat to the South in his capacity as head of national security.
Pol Gen Patcharawat was pressured into going to China to allow an unimpeded police investigation into the attempted killing of People's Alliance for Democracy leader Sondhi Limthongkul on April 17. Suggestions had been made Gen Patcharawat was obstructing the investigation.
Meanwhile, Mr Abhisit yesterday denied he had interfered in the reshuffle of 152 police generals. The prime minister said he was duty-bound to expedite the investigation into the Sondhi case.He had followed up the progress of several cases, but the media was focused on the Sondhi shooting. He said he was satisfied to a certain extent with the progress of the Sondhi investigation. "I'm not involved in the police reshuffle. What I'm doing is ensuring that the Sondhi case investigation can go ahead," he said."

No better evidence of that than the fact that former Bangkok Governor Apirak has turned down and said "no thanks" to the PM's offer to become the new government spokesman.

Have you also noticed that throughout all the BS about what progress the investigation is making, it's been months and they still haven't managed to take into custody any of the three little fish they have already issued arrest warrants for. How do they expect to catch "Mr Big" when they can't even find the little men who supposedly took the orders.
