It is with great sadness that I have to inform the Board that GayPattayan, Allen Briggs, passed away at 2.50 pm today at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital after a long illness. This came as a shock to me as I thought he was getting better, or at least not getting any worse, when I saw him last week. His heart had apparently failed him and according to his wishes, he was not artificially resuscitated.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Allen's family at this difficult time.
GayPattayan, Allen Briggs, has passed away

Both Allen and David in Pattaya were helpful to me when I first came to LOS and, for that, I'll always be grateful to them.
Rest in peace, Allen.

In this strange world of internet posting, I think I met Allen three times in person, although he never knew he was chatting with Hedda. I have to confess that he was quite unlike the man I had expected, based on his board persona. No H.L. Mencken, for sure; rather a quiet unassuming chap of little pretension.
I don't know what he would have thought about me, had he known this was Hedda in the flesh, given our history of sparring over a variety of issues, most of which were so profound that I have since forgotten them. Given the public social contexts in which we met on those few occasions, I thought it inappropriate to bring such board politics into the mix.
I do remember, however, the fortitude Allen showed when he agreed to publish in his newsletter my rebuttal to the nasty dispute that had developed when I joined in objecting to the lack of transparency in certain charitable fund raising events in Pattaya. A great deal of misinformation and heat got generated by some folks who should have known better had they bothered to check out their facts.
I was never quite sure what motivated him to publish that rebuttal, even though we discussed it at length through correspondence, but he bit the bullet and decided to tell "your side of this story." It helped to turn the tide and charitable fund raising in Pattaya changed for the better after that. In the Satirycon sleaze that can permeate so much of expat gay life and board postings here, I can think of no better memorial than to remember him for that.

Nice words Hedda.
He was a nice and friendly man. He also accepted us for beiing on his board. He also had the concept ( well he tried very hard !!) of freedom of speech.
R.I.P. dear Gay Pattayan.
Thanks from,
L and N.

Like others, I only knew Allen, more as a face than an acquiantance, but had the opportunity to visit with him in his last days. More like a King or President, eveyone knew him although he may have known us by face, if not by name.
Bon Voyage, Allen.
