"The Criminal Court Wednesday fined Daranee Charnchoengsilp Bt 50,000 after convicting her in defaming the 2006 coup leaders, former PM Surayud Chulanont and Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda.

The court found Daranee or Da Torpedo guilty of defaming Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin and Gen Saprang Kalayanamirt, the coup leaders, Surayud and Prem during a rally of the red-shirt people in 2007.Daranee will appeal against the ruling. She has earlier been given a jail term for lese majesty."

I guess it would be asking too much to know what the lady is supposed to have said that defamed the coup leaders.

It is very strange that the newspapers do seem to be treating these alleged defamations as if the three generals who were the subject of the alleged slander were protected by lese majeste. That draconian concept, of course, only applies to a few select royals.

As far as I know, there is no law in Thailand which forbids journalists from reporting what was allegedly said that the court ultimately found libelous. They did it just last week when they reported what PAD's Sondhi had said that got him convicted of defamation with a jail sentence thrown in. I fear that the lack of any details in this case this is another example of the English language newspapers voluntarily employing self-censorship to avoid offending some VIP's, which is appalling, if true.
