A group of people who live near the Map Ta Phut industrial estate in Rayong province began a march to the capital on Monday to petition Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in protest against the govrnment decision to appeal the Central Administrative Court's injunction halting work on 76 industrial projects in the estate.
Earlier this month, the government asked the Office of the Attorney-General to appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court, seeking the revocation of the injunction. Sutthi Atchasai, coordinator of the people's network of the eastern region, led between 50 and 100 residents on the walk to demand the government comply with the court order and help clean up pollution in the area by allowing the people in Rayong to take part in the industrial development there.
Mr Sutthi said they could walk about 30 kilometres a day, so it will take about five days to reach the parliament. The group would also file a protest letter with the Senate speaker, asking he investigate the work of the government because the industrial development had impacted badly on the environment and the lives of people in the area, he said. He said that the government had ignored the problems facing the people and made no attempt to find concrete solutions."
