The headline in Thailand's Pravda today announces that the judges of the court that's going to rule on the Thaksin assets case have been meeting with security officials to provide "safe" houses and transporatation for them should violence ensue after their decision. The whole thing has become a three ring circus orchestrated by the government and its military sponsors, the unspoken premise being that the court is almost certainly going to strip the Thaksin family members and in-laws of their wealth.
It's all starting to sound like the military are taking over in all but name, with Deputy PM Suthep, not Abhisit, in charge:
"The National Security Council will propose to the Cabinet meeting today that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva set up a special committee to oversee the situation, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said yesterday.
"Any violence or chaos would hurt the country, so security agencies should map out measures to prevent such situations from occurring," Suthep told reporters after meeting with security agencies. The security committee would be chaired by Suthep himself and include other relevant officials, such as Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, he said. The committee would also be given the right to call an urgent meeting at any time of the day or night, to ensure quick response and timely recommendations for measures, such as implementing the Internal Security Act, Suthep said.
However, Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd said it was not necessary to impose the security law right now.The metropolitan police force would be in charge of the capital, while commanders from four army regions, the Internal Security Operation Command and provincial governors would oversee the rest of the country, he said. [attachmentid=703] "Soldiers in Bangkok have been put on a high Level 3 alert after weekend bomb scares set nerves jangling ahead of next week's Supreme Court decision on the Shinawatra family assets. Scores of checkpoints were set up in sensitive parts of the city last night and special police patrols were launched after the country's top security officials met urgently yesterday to review the weekend's incidents. . .
Leading security officials rushed to a meeting at army headquarters to discuss the weekend incidents and advance preparations for what has come to be known as "judgement day", when the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions on Feb 26 brings down a verdict on the Shinawatra family's 76 billion baht in assets.
The officials included Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, army chief Anupong Paojinda, acting national police chief Pateep Tanprasert, Central Investigation Bureau commander Tha-ngai Pratsajaksatru, Special Branch Police chief Tritos Ronritthiwichai and secretary-general of the National Security Council Tawil Plienwithee.
"Soldiers were ordered to be strategically ready at Level 3, or a yellow alert, be watchful and monitor situations closely," an army source said after the meeting."
