Fake drugs are rampant on Internet
"As much as half of the pharmaceuticals sold over the Internet are fake, the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned. FDA secretarygeneral Dr Siriwat Tiptaradol said World Health Organisation data showed 50 per cent of online sales of drugs worldwide were counterfeit, as were 15 per cent of all other sales.
Controlled medicines normally requiring a doctor's prescription were for sale without restriction on the Internet, he said.
Most popular online purchases were tranquillisers, diet pills, aphrodisiacs and remedies for male erectile dysfunction. There are side effects and risks of death from taking fake drugs, Siriwat warned."

When they say "fake or counterfeit", do they include generic drugs that are copies of patented medicines ? Those drugs might be chemically identical to the real thing, and just as effective, but also "counterfeit."

I think they mean a product not made by the owner of the patent, regardless of its effectiveness.
They do say this in the article:
"...it was often difficult to detect fake drugs in lab tests because they were well duplicated."
That suggests to me that they are including all unauthorized generic copies as "fakes" regardless of their effectiveness as medicine.
