According to the article linked below, a young student who calls herself Karn Thoop, and who works at a scholarly left-leaning but pacifist journal called Fah Deaw Kan ("Always Blue skies") that is often critical of the monarchy and government, has been denied enrollment into the School of the Faculty of Arts at Silpakorn University.
According to the Dean, her personality "would not help her to get along with fellow students ...and her anti-monarchist behavior is not bearable."
So much for academic freedom.

[attachmentid=835] Here's an expanded English translation of the ugly article run by Sondhi 's mouthpiece ASTV/ Manager on the subject:

QUOTE
Ms. Natthakarn Sakoondarachart has been known to post topics in Fah Deaw Kan website and facebook featuring slandering, rude and anti-monarchist contents. Among social networkers, there have been many criticisms against her behaviors. A lot of emails and calls have been made to Thara Prasat Petchwittaya School in Nakhon Ratchasima, where she graduated from, to notify the School of such behaviors.
Lately, Ms. Natthakarn passed the entrance examination for the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University. Nevertheless, according to Assc Prof Dr. Pinmanee Promsutthirak, Dean of Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University, it is true that Ms. Natthakarn has passed the entrance for the Faculty of Arts. She is supposed to study in the Asian Studies Department focusing on learning Asian languages including Korean, Japanese, etc. It is a special program set up by the University and only 200 students have been recruited. Ms. Natthakarn’s results of examination are fair.
“Academically, she passed the test and also the oral examination. Thus she was recruited. It was indeed a good opportunity for her since this is a special program and only 200 students are recruited. We will have native speakers to teach. But due to tons of information we have received from people, we have decided to repeal her right to study in our Faculty” said the Dean of Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University.
According to Assc Prof Dr. Pinmanee, there is no written rule that a student of this university has to be loyal to the major national institutes. It is assumed a duty for Thai people to know and hold on to this noble attitude. Considering background of Ms. Natthakarn, it is led to believe her personality shall cause problems. Had she been enrolled, she would not be able to get along with other fellow students.
It was also reported that Ms. Natthakarn is a regular poster of messages showing views against the monarchy in facebook and other websites. In addition, she has declared herself a supporter of the Red Shirts demonstration, and has even spoken on the stage to instigate the demonstrators."

She's such a pretty young thing, you'd never know she was a die-hard terrorist. Lord knows how many lives might be lost if she came to school with her little bra stuffed with fragmentation grenades. Keeping unpatriotic people like her out of school will make Thailand a much better place. You know, these political matters are far too complex to listen to someone like her who lacks a higher education. If she wants one, she has to learn to behave. Otherwise, she'll be much happier making a living hustling farangs in Patpong.

You sound just like MY granny. Welcome to the board Khun Yaai!

We all get so tired and cyncial about Thailand and its leaders that we forget that the small people are usually the ones to suffer the most from the fighting. Personally, I think that the academics involved in the decision to refuse this girl's admission for the reasons stated are jackasses of the first order who have disgraced academia and who would be fired in any institution that had any sense of academic integrity. If their comments and actions are any indication of the institution that employs them, I wouldn't send my Jack Russell to get toilet trained there.

As bad as the behavior of the university has been in this matter, the way in which Sondhi Limthongkul's newspaper chose to publicize and treat the story only accentuates the ugliness that lurks in right wing political circles here. Despicable is the word that comes to mind first and last. It's frightening to think that men who think like that want to run this country. It's worse to think that some may already have their hand on power and are biding their time to bury what's left of civil rights.
Farangs who think this is all none of our business would do well to remember that a government that has no scruples about depriving its own citizens of their civil rights is unlikely to deal any better with foreigners. Some of the right wing monarchists who are vying for dominance in the present government have a streak of zenophobia that is scary. If they treat red shirts and Thai muslims in the south as second class citizens, where do you think they see us potatoes ?

The TeakDoor board has posts reporting that this young student has been offered a scholarship to an overseas University. No further details yet.Let's all hope that the name of Dr. Pinmanee Promsutthirak, Dean of Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University, will be recorded and remembered in the halls of academic infamy.
