To be honest, I have been staying away from Sunee Plaza for the past week since i don't want to get involved in any more of those police stings for underage sex.
I overheard a conversation at the beach this afternoon, the gist of which was that things are back to normal at Sunee and the naked dancing and sex shows have started again.
Question: If you are in a bar and it's raided for underage boys, and some underage boys are found, can the police legally detain you as a customer ?
Can they arrest you in a raid ?

I very much doubt they can arrest you unless, of course, they catch you 'in flagrante delicto' having sexual contact of any sort with an under-age boy. They could, of course, 'detain' you for a while whilst enquiries are being made.
Personally I would'nt frequent ANY bar that obviously has under-age boys plying their trade.

My guess is that the police do not detain farangs in these raids because they know that the first press reports of that occurrence would effectively kill the business not only in that bar, but any other bar that might have an underaged staff.
We don't want to kill the golden geese now, do we ?

I am not so sure Hedda.
I have been kept in a bar for about three hours. they didn't let me go. Even they took pictures from me.
It was a very unpleasant experience. By that time, I was still married with my wife and I was very very afraid that she would see those pictures. A few weeks ago even t.v. channels were taking pictures in some area's in Pattaya famous for underage boys.
Also noswadays everybody can make a picture with a hidden camera. I saw that the BBC is showing some program soon again which was made by hidden camera's in Pattaya.
Hopefully I am not on it. Not that I go to bars which are famous for young boys but you never know.

As pattayaloverforyou says, it is my understanding they can detain you in the bar, but arrests do not take place unless something quite unusual is going on. It is also my understanding the police have the legal right to have you tested for drugs, to search you, and to demand to see your passport. However, that almost never happens.
Pattayaloverforyou also brought out an important point. There is the possibility of ending up with your photo in the newspaper or on television. However, that is extremely rare and unfortunately he was caught up in an isolated incident.
The bottom line is you're safe if you are simply patronizing the bar, but this is Thailand. There are no guarantees.

The bottom line is if they can overthrow the democratically elected government they can probably get away with arresting a western tourist.
I wouldn't like to be simply patronising a bar if they decided to raid it and invite a BBC camera crew along for the show. It wouldn't matter what you were actually doing or how old your 'partner' was - your photo and the word pedophile in the same news report 'back home' would be enough for you to be guilty until proven innocent.
AYOR as they say.

Once again, raids on these bars that include detaining customers and include camera and news crews are extremely rare. I have no idea why pattayaloverforyou disputes that, but I can tell you that in the past ten years I have heard of such raids a total of three times. Raids are common enough, but that kind of raid? Hardly ever. If you want to let that frighten you away from the bars, that's your choice, but to me that's the same thing as being frightened away from flying because you heard about an airplane crash.
And yes, my "BIG" police neighbor assures me that simply being in a bar is not a crime.
