[attachmentid=872] "Red-shirt leader and terrorism suspect Nattawut Saikua may decide to contest the by-election for Bangkok Constituency 6, scheduled for July 25, Pheu Thai MP Jatuporn Promphan said on Friday."Following the check on Nattawut's qualifications, a petition will be lodged to seek the judicial permission to take him out of his remand cell to register for his candidacy," Jatuporn said.

He said Nattawut had a good chance for victory just like the case in Northern Ireland where Irish dissident Bobby Sands campaigned and won from his prison cell.Nattawut's campaign would shed light on the culprits behind the torching of Central World during the unrest, he said. Under the election law, there is no ban for a candidate to campaign under remand. The by-election is to fill the House seat previously occupied by Democrat MP Tiva Ngernyuang who passed away."

It's good to see young heroes emerging for the red shirts. It will help them cast off what is to some democracy backers the negative side of the Thaksin connection over time. Personally, I would love to see this guy run and win. Wouldn't that send a message to the corrupt old men who think all they got to do is shoot people to hold onto power.

A co-leader of the red-shirt people group Natthawut Saikua will be nominated by Puea Thai Party to run as Bangkok’s Constituency 6 MP next month, party list MP of the opposition camp Jatuporn Prompan said on Sunday. . .

However, Mr Natthawut's incarceration could keep him from running, as election law demands that applications for candidacy in elections be submitted in person.

Mr Natthawut is being detained at the Bangkok Remand Prison on charges related to his alleged involvement in terrorist acts during the two-month United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship protest."

I'm not sure if Pheu Thai seriously thinks that Natthawut or any other Pheu Thai candidate can win in this Bangkok district but the government is going to look very bad if he is prevented from personally registering as a candidate because the CRES and some compliant judge won't let him out of his confinement on what he claims are trumped charges. He will look to the world like a political prisoner whose civil rights are being denied by an authoritarian government, not that much different from Aung San in Burma.

"The Puea Thai Party had on Wednesday decided to field Mr Korkaew in the July 25 by-election in Bangkok's constituency 6. Mr Korkaew is currently in jail, denied bail and held under a warrant, and faces terrorism charges. Puea Thai's lawyers would seek Mr Korkaew's release on bail to enable him to register for candidacy on Monday, June 28, MP Vicharn Meenchainan announced on Wednesday.

The Department of Corrections was ready to release Korkaew Pikulthong, a co-leader of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) if ordered by the court, director general Chartchai Sutthiklom said on Thursday.Mr Chartchai was responding to a report that Karom Ponthaklang, UDD lawyer, will today petition to the court requesting for a temporary release of Mr Korkaew.

“We are ready to free Mr Korkaew if ordered by the court. And if the court orders the detention of Mr Korkaew after the by-election, we will comply with it”, Mr Chartchai said."

"The Corrections Department chief said Saturday that Kokaew Pikultong will, a detained red-shirt leader, will not be allowed to wear an inmate uniform to apply for the Bangkok by-election Monday.Chatchai Sutthiklom, the corrections department director-general, said uniform is supposed to be used only inside a prison.

He said applying as a candidate for an election is a honorable activity so it would be inappropriate for Kokaew to get dressed in the inmate uniform.

The Criminal Court allowed Kokaew to walk out of the prison temporally to register his candidacy to contest the by-election.The Pheu Thai Party has decide to run Kokaew in the contest."
