"Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has rejected sceptics' theories that the explosion near the coalition Bhum Jai Thai Party's headquarters yesterday was launched so that the government could retain the state of emergency. He said this incident was proof certain groups were still trying to instigate violence, which made the emergency decree necessary in the first place.
"We hope no violent incidents take place during the Bangkok by-election. Violence is not part of democracy, and it indicates the perpetrators have other objectives," Abhisit said.
A Government House source said the state of emergency in Bangkok and some provinces was likely to be renewed for another 60 days once it expired on July 7.

"The Explosion in front of the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters on Tuesday was set up by the government to support the continued imposition of the emergency law, red-shirt co-leader and Puea Thai Party list MP Jatuporn Prompan said on Wednesday. Mr Jatuporn said the blast was aimed at justifying the extension of the emergency decree, which expires on July 7, on the grounds of continuing unrest.
Tthe Puea Thai Party was ready to campaign during the run up to the by-election in Bangkok's constituency 6 regardless of the emergency decree, he said.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva earlier denied any government involvement in the explosion and said it was still not clear whether the blast was an act of terrorism."

Army commander-in-chief Anupong Poajinda denied as groundless a report that the army was behind the bombing at headquarters of Bhumjaithai Party to continue the imposition of emergency decree in Bangkok and other provinces.
Gen Anupong also denied an allegation by Jatuporn Prompan, party list MP of the opposition Puea Thai Party, that the army had increased number of snipers at the 11th Infantry Regiment in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district. “I have never made the order to increase number of snipers as alleged”, he affirmed.
Asked about keeping peace and order during the by-election in Bangkok’s constituency 6 on July 25, the army chief said if the Election Commission asks for military forces to maintain peace, he will comply with the requested."
