Chavalit invited to be new TRT leader
"Former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh said Friday morning that he has been invited to take the post as the Thai Rak Thai party leader to replace ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who resigned shortly after being ousted by a coup.
Gen Chavalit said, however, he has not decided whether to take the position because he is not sure about the fate of the Thai Rak Thai party.
Thai Rak Thai and four other parties faced party dissolution if they are found to be guilty in an electoral fraud trial. The party is accused of bankrolling smaller parties to run in the April 2 general election to avoid meeting the requirement for its lone candidates to win at least 20% of the total vote in their constituencies.
Gen Chavalit has opened his residence since this morning to welcome those wishing to give him a blessing for the New Year celebration.
None of the members of Council for National Security have yet showed up at his residence despite earlier reports that they would go to visit him on Friday morning.
An official at Gen Chavalit's residence said Army Chief and CNS chairman Sonthi Boonyaratkalin cannot make it today because of an urgent work."

General Chavalit has suggested that the army is spying on him and is tapping his phones. The Army denies it, presumably on the grounds that the old man has got nothing to say worth listening to.

If you want to see a wild piece about General Chavailt, take a look at an article in the Nation entitled: "Does Chavalit make noise just to hear himself?"
To give you a sample of what's been said there:
"There is a long-standing and dark joke among his friends and subordinates that if anyone wants Chavalit to do something, the person must stay with him until the job is done or the decision is made.
Leaving him with somebody else is a total risk. He tends to be swayed by the last person who sticks with him.
Of course, there are people who admire his brilliance as a shrewd strategist, whose moves are unpredictable to friends and foes alike.
That was when he worked as an adviser, mostly behind the scenes, for his boss. Yes, to him there is just one - former prime minister, General Prem Tinsulanonda."
