"RATCHABURI : A member of a drug gang who killed a policeman at a checkpoint was shot dead by police at his apartment hours later. He is the second member of the gang to be killed by police since early May.

Manit Toommuang, alias Tong Donsai, 24, was killed at his apartment yesterday, after shooting dead an officer at a checkpoint hours before. Police captured him after he broke through a police checkpoint in tambon Wang Yen in Bang Phae district of Ratchaburi. They took him back to his apartment intending to search it, when he allegedly made a grab for an officer's gun.

Shortly before Manit was shot, he was pictured on his couch. His hands were handcuffed behind his back.Police say he nonetheless managed to make a grab for the gun, so they shot and killed him

Manit was allegedly part of a large drug gang headed by Wisan Sansoy, who was killed by police on June 4. Wisan was killed together with his wife Wassana Chanhom in Pak Tho district of Ratchaburi when he attempted to flee a police raid on his hideout in a forest.

Manit was wanted on robbery charges, although police say they did not know who he was when he burst through the police checkpoint on his motorcycle at 1am. A woman was riding pillion. Police pursued the pair to the Bang Phae-Damnoen intersection where Manit turned his gun on police. He fired five shots, killing Pol Sgt Maj Suvit Kwanmuang, a Bang Phae district policeman. Police returned fire and killed the woman, identified as Sunisa Yupan, 22, who was Manit's girlfriend.

Police caught and arrested Manit. They said he admitted possessing about 50 methamphetamine pills, but threw them away as police gave chase. Police handcuffed him and took him to his rental apartment in Photharam district. There, according to police, he tried to snatch a gun from an officer. Police shot him, and Manit died at the scene. His body will be examined by forensic specialists.

His death yesterday brought out from hiding a third alleged member of the gang.Vijai Nakwan, 34, a suspect in the killing of two police in Ratchaburi in May, handed himself in to police after hearing about Manit's death. He said he didn't want to be the next member of the gang to be killed by vengeful police. Police pulled over Vijai's car at an intersection in Pak Tho district for a search in early May. He allegedly opened fire, killing two officers.

Meanwhile, the government says it is embarking on a new phase of its so-called "five fences" policy against drugs.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday the government's campaign against drugs, targetting communities in Bangkok and the major provinces, would reduce social problems in drug-prone areas, tackle the spread of drugs, promote neighbourhood watch, clamp down on drug use at nightspots and increase the efficiency of drugs operations."

It's interesting to see how the Thaksin haters always ignore these threads.

They conveniently ignore any thread or post that doesn't suit their sensitivities and prejudices. Perhaps it's their way of coping with Thailand. God knows that's how the Thais do it.

Calling a few killings in two months a drug war is rather silly. And then using the non-responses (to a thread which is eminently ignorable) as some logical basis to argue against those that dislike Shinawatra is even sillier.

I might have missed something here but I thought Uncle Sam and Maurice were speaking about the general tendency of posters who disapprove of Thaksin to ignore news which don't suit their view of him and not about responding to this thread specifically. You may disagree with their opinions but I don't find anything "silly" or "sillier" in them.

You've got to be kidding. How (some logic, please) could news of a these police killings in the last two months possibly have anything to do with Shinawatra let alone exonerate him?

moreRICE fast becoming the Queen of redHERRINGS.
Nice logic RICE ... but in a way, just as intellectually corrupt as this Board always has been.

On the other hand: for honesty and integrity ... try GOLF!
Huge playoff today after a nail-biting last round consisting of Mr Corey Pavin (Old Guy and short driving. Experienced. Hasn't won in a coon's age); Mr Scott Verplank (Old Guy. Straight as an arrow ~ driving. Ditto for winning); and Mr Bubba(?) Watson (not son-of-Tom, no wins, averages 360 yds as drive. Fires in the drink regularly).
Think: for the win, Bubba smacks it 390 yards then a sand wedge 123 yrds to 2 inches from the hole. In for the birdie. Paving knocked out ... Bubba wins on the 2nd playoff hole when Verplank bogeys. Exhilarating.
Pavin, some years ago, once called himself on a shot in-the-woods unobserved by fans or cameras. Such honesty places golf in the clouds when pitted against any other sport (some of which are atrocious) and presents an interesting contrast to the predictable BahtSpeakin' of the 8 or so locksteppers of this Board.
And they wonder why no one shows up.

I was in Thailand throughout the drug war and this is exactly how it started. There would be stories of an occasional shooting by the police under suspicious circumstances that looked like they were executing drug suspects on the spot. It wasn't until later, when Thaksin became a political target, that everyone started to talk about and realize that those stories of police killings were the tip of the iceberg.

In this case, it looks like two men and their wives or girl friends have been shot to death by the police within 22 days of each other: June 4 and June 26, under circumstances that look disturbingly like dejavu on the drug front. Killing suspects is bad enough, but killing their female companions too ?

Anyone who lives in this country knows that police can and will do terrible things when they know they can act with impunity. I don't know how anyone could describe that as "eminently ignorable." That's exactly what happened in the last drug war, and look where that ended up.
