I thought I would share this with you – enjoy.

On Wednesday afternoon in Bangkok I was caught out in the rain and had to take shelter with one of my employees. While we waited for the storm to abate the young man, who had recently returned from rice planting in Surin, told me that there was almost no rain in his home province.

“It’s our karma” he explained. “Red shirt people come from Isan to Bangkok and burn down shops. Now Bangkok people need rain to put out the fires, so no rain falls in Surin. Our rice is dying because there is no water left for us.”

I must admit to being rather surprised at this superstitious explanation for our weather patterns so I asked him to elaborate.

“We do bad things in Bangkok, so now Buddha helps Bangkok people and punishes Isan people” was his reason. “Maybe soon Bangkok can forgive us and rain will come to Surin”.

I think we all know now where Grampa gets his profound insights about Thai politics.

Be careful Gramps. He could be the kind of guy who thinks he can get the rain back by sacrificing a farang to the rain god.

I am sitting in my bedroom at this moment. My window faces south where Surin is 43 kilometers away. Since I moved to this location on June 1, we have had rain at various lengths and various volumes for 16 of those days and the consensus is that we have not yet entered the monsoon season. I know for a fact Buriram Province contributed its share of Red Shirts. I think it is very important that you share this information with your employee, because, unless he feels that the fates have singled Surin out to torment for the protests, his belief concerning the root of his bad karma is misdirected and he may be looking in the wrong place to deal with it. Please assure him that I will make merit for him and his family this evening for whatever reason he is experiencing these troubles.
