"Thailand reaffirmed its stand on Preah Vihear Temple - demarcation of the border should be completed before debating and endorsing a joint administrative plan for the World Heritage Site, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday. Abhisit's remarks precede the 34th Session of Unesco's World Heritage Committee, due to be held on Wednesday in Brasilia.

Cambodia is expected to push for the adoption of an administrative plan it has drawn up for the temple. "The government has consistently rejected the map used by Cambodia in claiming the temple and adjacent areas located within its borders and Thailand has never accepted the World Court verdict on the temple as a ruling on border demarcation," he said.

Acting under the government's instruction, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Suwit Khunkitti planned to voice rigorous opposition to the temple administrative plan and would ask the committee to postpone the debate on the issue, he said."

Here's hoping that Unesco's World Heritage Committee does not allow Thailand to inject its adolescent attitude into the proceedings. I am afraid, however, that this very weak prime minister has no stomach to act like a statesman, not a demagogue.

You got that right. He had the hypocrisy to invite the PAD leaders to his home for two hours when they were illegally demonstrating under his declared State of Emergency and are facing terrorism charges in court for the closing of govt house and the airport. The man is a first class phony.He will do anything to hold onto his job as PM.

Abhisit said yesterday that Thailand would not walk out of the UN WHC meeting. Abhisit then meets with the crazies at PAD and announces that Thailand will walk out and throw a Hissy Fit at the UN if it doesn't get its way at the meeting. Who's running this country ?

"Cabinet has instructed Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti to walk out of the meeting if the World Heritage Committee (WHC) discusses Cambodia's management plan for the Preah Vihear temple without taking Thailand's protest into consideration, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said. Mr Suwit is in Brasilia, Brazil's capital, to attend the WHC meeting, which is due to discuss Cambodia's management plan for the 1,000-year-old Hindu temple.

Mr Abhisit said the cabinet on Wednesday agreed that if the WHC went ahead with consideration of Cambodia's proposal, Mr Suwit should walk out and boycott the vote. Mr Suwit should also review Thailand's WHC membership if it looked likely to endorse the management plan."

The situation is going from bad to worse as Abhisit panders to the ultra-nationalist crazies in PAD and Thailand looks more adolescent to the rest of the world :

It's hard to sympathize with the Thais on this issue because they have done very little but huff and puff in the fifty years since the World Court ruled that the temple belonged to Cambodia, leaving a number of Cambodians civilians and soldiers dead in the process. For Thailand to tell the UN now that it needs more time to negotiate a settlement of the border issue with Cambodia sounds like nothing but empty posturing. It makes Thailand looks like that proverbial banana republic before the whole world.

Don't be surprised if the gang running things now in Bangkok use this issue to start shooting at the border again. The best way to make the Thais army and people forget about shooting each other is to get them riled up enough to start shooting Cambodians again. Remember that "patriotism is usually the first and last refuge of scoundrels."
